Radio Birdman’s comeback in Italy is an unmissable occasion to get again in touch with a legendary band that has a key role in the hsitory of australian rock. Three studio albums (Radios Appear, Living Eyes) published in different years (1977, 1981 e 2014), two Eps, a bunch of singles and three live records (Ritualism, Live in Texas and Live at Paddington Town Hall from 1977) show a way of intending rock’n’roll which combines the proto-punk fury of Stooges and Mc5 with the psychedelic sound of the Doors, therefore becoming a very unique experience in the aussie rock scene. In three years and a half, from the end of ’74 to the summer of ‘78, Radio Birdman have managed to acquire the status of prime movers in a scene which will evolve significantly in the next decade. Despite the hostility of the music industry, they have kept carrying on their DIY spirit, gaining consensus among the audience. Chiudiamo le classifiche annuali con questa speciale Top Ten dedicata ai singoli arrivata dalla lontana Australia, che hanno impreziosito i nostri ascolti del 2024. 1. THE JUDGES - Guns (ANTI FADE records/Drunken Sailor Records) Dopo l'ottimo disco d'esordio pubblicato nel 2023, il quintetto di Melbourne propone questo singolo esplosivo con la title track,   "Guns" , una dronante meditazione groove sul traffico internazionale di armi, l'imperialismo, la guerra e l'assoluta inutilità/utilità (?) di usare il Rock & Roll come arma contro l'establishment che probabilmente ne ha creato e favorito la crescita. E "(The People Want A) Show" , un numero uptempo neo-proto-punk che ha come tema il desiderio intrinseco delle masse indifferenti di consumare all'infinito mezzi di intrattenimento di ogni tipo, compreso il già citato formato del Rock & Roll. 2.     1 - CUTTERS - Psychic Injury (Legless/Drunken Sailor Records) L’attesissimo album d’esordio del quartetto di Melbourne si è rivelato aderente alle aspettative. “Psychic Injury” è un ferocissimo assalto sonoro punk/hardcore con testi altrettanto rabbiosi contro il sistema e la moderna società australiana ma che sono mutuabili in ogni paese. Un invito a restare vigili perché “il futuro si prospetta più cupo della sala fumatori di un aeroporto”. 2 - CHIMERS – Trough Today (Poison City Records) Il secondo album del duo di Wollongong (sempre Australia) conferma quanto di buono prodotto in precedenza, con il loro sound poco australiano, fatto di chitarre dissonanti, linee di batteria fuori dal coro, melodie difficili da dimenticare.   “Through Today” è un grande album, con una struttura molto ben articolata che dall’inizio alla fine si dipana in maniera netta senza mai indugiare alla tentazione di arricchirlo di inutili orpelli.
