Deniz Tek Band Live Report Freak Out Club, Bologna 22 gen 2023
La versione in italiano è pubblicata su Freak Out Magazine
The Otis agency's relationship with Deniz Tek has been
consolidated for years, including the vinyl reissues of several albums released
by the founder of Radio Birdman's founder, as part of his solo career, through the Wild
Honey label run by Franz Barcella together with his work as tour manager at
Otis.
And so, for his return to the scene, Deniz Tek has chosen Italy to present the umpteenth line-up of his band, engaged in a long European tour in support of his latest record 'Long Before Day' published last year on CD by Career Records in the USA and by Wild Honey in Europe on LP.
The new version of the Deniz Tek Band features 'Long Before
Day' producer and sound engineer Bob Brown, Fleshtones guitarist Keith Streng
as on the record as drummer and Anne Tek on rhythm guitar.
The date at the Freak Out Club in Bologna, which we
followed, was the fourth on this tour that showcased a band that is starting to
power through after a long period of inactivity and gave the large audience
present an excellent concert, in some ways surprising, because it was full of
time jumps that spanned the entire Deniz Tek's career.
The concert started with a classic that Peter Green wrote
for Fleetwood Mac in the late sixties. "Oh Well" proposed in a key
respectfully faithful to the original, immediately followed by one of the Radio
Birdman classics that Tek loves to propose in concert: "Smith & Wesson
Blues". The rock blues is the main element of this live show, since it
will be proposed at various times throughout the set, but the real reason for
interest, at least for those like me who have seen practically all his Italian
concerts, is represented by the recovery of songs from various past solo albums
such as Detroit, of which "Can of Soup" and "Pine Box" are
proposed, or going to recover from the distant repertoire of The Vistors, the
classic "Brother John", followed by "Snake" by Radio
Birdman.
To be honest, it was a little strange that so little space was given to songs from the latest album 'Long Before Day', of which only the title track was played, together with 'Ballad of Chief Joseph' and "Truck & Roll', although the album contains many noteworthy songs.
But the band proved their worth in all performances, Bob
Brown is a solid bass player, Keith Streng untangled himself very well behind
the drums and Anne Tek, played the role of rhythm guitar to perfection.
The biggest surprise, however, was the cover of Henry Mancini's famous Pink Panther theme, but also the revival of tracks such as 'Big Accumulator' from Deep Reduction's repertoire. One song each was also reserved for the albums 'Fast Freight' ('John Henry's Hammer') and 'Mean Old Twister' ('Prison Mouse'), before closing the set with two absolute Birdman anthems such as 'Breaks My Heart' and 'Hand of Law', which Deniz Tek practically always performs at his concerts.
The tribute to the Stooges could not miss and was not missed
in the encores with a beautiful version of "I Need Somebody" before
closing the concert in surf key with the instrumental "Eddie Would
Go" which opened the 2018 album "Lost For Words" and yet another
RB classic "Aloha Steve & Danno".
The excellent response of the audience in the hall and the feeling created by the band on stage put the seal on a concert that was certainly successful despite a few minor flaws of a band still breaking in, but which showed a solidity made up as always of music played with heart.
